Nicky's response to question of Prince William's full head of hair
Throughout history it has been fashionable to take issue with aspects of one's own portrait. Even the great Edwardian painter, John Singer Sargent, wrote: 'A portrait is a picture in which there is always something not quite right about the mouth'.
My intention is always to paint what I see, never to deceive, over flatter, or to be deliberately unkind. Prince William was painted first at least eighteen months ago and arguably had a thicker head of hair in those days. However, in reference to this, I challenge visitors to the National Portrait Gallery to spot a particular flesh coloured brushstroke...' |
