Evening Standard

October 2005

...The old assumption that it was only the aristocracy who had their portrait painted has undergone a sea-change ... it's not a class thing now. Someone came in and said last year's bonus had gone on a Maserati and this year's was going on a group portrait of the family. He saw it as an investment...

FT: The Business

2002

Many portrait subjects may well endure the lengthy sittings shifting uncomfortably, not relishing the idea of having their every wrinkle and facial nuance so closely examined. But increasingly the portrait is becoming the 21st-century take on building a family album.

Business and Pleasure

It was only a matter of time. If standard lamps, bell-bottoms and Carmen rollers can muscle their way back into Britain's homes, there was never any doubt that the pendulum would swing back to the noble art of portraiture. After many decades in the doldrums, portrait painting is suddenly very fashionable indeed.

You

Everybody suddenly realised that it's a very interesting thing to do." says Sara Stewart, who started Fine Art Commissions five years ago. "Previously, it was men who were rewarded with portraits, say, for a job promotion. But what's new is that women are now commissioning pictures of themselves to celebrate decade birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, important life stages - and even divorces."

Homes & Gardens

She describes the process of clients looking through the portfolio as similar to perusing an interior decorator's swatchbook - there will be at least seven pictures by each art sit. She represents more than 70 artists to accommodate preferred styles and budgets, and she also has a collection of different portraits of herself by a wide range of artists to help clients decide.
